The city of volcanoes

Clermont-Ferrand is the largest city in the Puy-de-Dôme district. It is located at the heart of the Massif Central mountain range, and is surrounded by a chain of volcanoes, "la Chaîne des Puy". Clermont-Ferrand is one of the oldest cities in France, as it started developing before the Gallo-Roman era. The most famous monument in the city is its black lava stone Gothic Cathedral. Clermont-Ferrand welcomes around 40 000 students every year, among whom 15% of international students.

Did you know

Clermont-Ferrand has once been the capital of France... for one day! After 1940's armistice with Germany, France was separated in two, and had to look for a new capital in the "free zone". Before establishing in Vichy, the French administration was hosted in Clermont-Ferrand for one day.
